Sightreading Procedure - This for Senior High ONLY:

  1. Only Senior High students will be judged on their sight reading ability. Sight reading guidelines include the following:
    1. The All-West Senior high audition CD will include a sight reading section containing:
      1. A piano timbre playing a D4 for women and a D3 for men.
      2. Twenty (20) seconds of silence during which the student will examine the material. During this time they may practice the exercise aloud. The student is not to be judged on anything heard during the twenty (20) seconds.
      3. A piano timbre repeating the starting pitch will be played.
      4. A four count click track count-off will set the tempo
      5. Clicks continue throughout the duration of the sight reading exercise.
    2. The length and characteristics of the sight reading excerpt will be determined by the Executive Committee and announced in conjunction with the musical selections for All-West auditions.
    3. Sight reading is worth five (5) points of the audition and will be scored as follows:
      1. One (1) point for starting on the correct pitch
      2. Two (2) points for correct notes, distributed equally across the number of measures in the sight reading exercise. (1 Point for measures 1 and 2 and 1 Point for measures 3 and 4)
      3. Two (2) points for correct rhythm, distributed equally across the number of measures in the sight reading exercise. (1 Point for measures 1 and 2 and 1 Point for measures 3 and 4)

Statements of Clarification:

  1. A single judge may conduct a strict 4 beat pattern (floor, wall, wall, ceiling). The judge may give a preparatory breath for the first beat of the exercise.
  2. Close enough is WRONG!!! Sight-reading is black or white: All notes and rhythms are either right or wrong.
  3. Judges must be consistent with their scoring. All judges should come to a consensus before notating their score.
  4. Do not alter the above format in any way. We must follow the rules set forth above.

Abendlied (Rheinberger) CPDL - Download PDF here also. From the event chairperson: "The website gives two links to "Abendlied". The CPDL link is the one that was used to prepare the practice tracks, where the score calls for Soprano, Alto I, and Alto II. The PDF link to the same piece calls for Soprano 1, Soprano II, and Alto. The bottom line is that the (CPDL) Soprano II and (PDF) Alto 1 parts are identical. Directors should use the PDF link for the correct version (voice parts) of the music. The Alto 1 track can be used by the Soprano II's." You may download the audio file here.

To all SW directors from the chairperson:

Directors Arrive: 7:30 am (Enter the door by the cafeteria on the SW corner on the school as indicated on the map given to you at the August meeting. Students are to park in this SW lot. There will be signs in the parking lot and on the entrance door.)

7:30 - All directors and parent volunteers will meet in the library for instructions and judging assignments. There will be necessary discussion about sightreading, judging and door monitoring. Please be on time. (Breakfast items will be available.)

8:15 - Judges move to assigned rooms.

8:30 - Auditions begin on time.

Lunch is provided in the library for all directors and parent volunteers.

VERY IMPORTANT!! - Please advise all students to be aware that the cafeteria is to be used for students who are waiting to audition. Please be mindful of those who are concentrating on their audition music, etc. The booster parents have the authority to ask the students to behave properly in the cafeteria. Thanks for your help!

Concessions: Breakfast and lunch items will be available all day in the cafeteria for sale for students and parents.

Auditioning students should check in at the check-in table upon arrival with their audition ticket. Arrival time should be at least one hour prior to their scheduled audition time. They will be told where we are on the audition schedule at that time. They are to wait in the cafeteria until their times are called.

Students, parents, friends, etc. are not allowed past the information table throughout the audition process.

ALL DIRECTORS ARE TO STAY UNTIL THE PROCESS IS COMPLETED.
ALERT! - ONLY ORIGINAL MUSIC IS ALLOWED FOR EVERY STUDENT. If a student auditions with copied music, they will be disqualified.

MEMO CONCERNING PARENT HELPERS

As in years past we will need parent helpers. These helpers will serve as door monitors and assist at the check-in desk. In order to be fair, I am asking everyone who has more than 20 students auditioning to bring 1 parent. Those with fifty or more students should bring 2 parents. This will greatly aid in the audition process. As of today, we do not have enough teachers to cover judging and serve at the help desk or as door monitors. Please arrange to have enough parents to cover the number of students you have registered. The directors and the parents must be at the Judges’ meeting at 7:30 am in the Collierville High School Library.
